Amina Seddiq, LCSW

My Story
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be in a “helping” career, and after my own experience in therapy, I knew I wanted to become a therapist to help others like me. After training as a therapist, I was introduced to Islamic Psychology, which harmoniously merged Faith and Mental Health for me. I know how helpful it is to have a Muslim therapist, especially when dealing with life’s hardships, and I truly believe in every person’s capacity for healing and growth.

Educational Background

I earned my Master’s of Social Work from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, United Kingdom. I have completed training in group-based, trauma-based, and cognitive-behavioral modalities. For two years, I worked at the Stanford Muslim Mental Health & Islamic Psychology Lab under Dr. Rania Awaad.

Clinical Experience

I have extensive experience working at a community health clinic, a Level 1 Trauma Center Hospital, a residential women’s shelter, a multi-cultural family non-profit, an intensive outpatient program for middle and high schoolers at a private practice, and a refugee resettlement agency.

Areas of Expertise

I work with teenagers, couples, and individuals on a wide range of issues, such as depression, anxiety, self-harm, and OCD. I have worked with Muslim immigrant and refugee populations for many years. I have also worked with trauma survivors since the start of my career. I’m a good fit for those seeking spiritual integration into their therapy.

My Approach

I use a holistic approach with the integration of Islamic psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma modalities such as Cognitive Processing Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and somatic techniques such as mindfulness. I believe therapeutic processing and healing are tailored to the client and what they want to get out of the therapy. I am also passionate about skill-building, such as healthy coping and emotional regulation skills, as well as conflict resolution and healthy communication skills. But the most important element in therapy for me is providing a safe and non-judgemental space for a collaborative approach to healing.
